Court-ordered rehab is an alternative to being sentenced on a criminal matter to which addiction was once considered. This is ultimately a change for the better as addiction is now considered a health problem, instead. 80% of crimes that result in jail time in the United States are drug and alcohol-related.
Now, some drug-related crimes are being addressed with rehabilitation centers instead of incarceration. This helps with overpopulation in jails while also helping people suffering from drug and alcohol problems get to the root of their problem in a rehabilitation center, helping it to become less likely for an instance to occur again.
